CHRIS ANDERSON
Live At Bradleys

When Chris Anderson played, you were always in good hands. You could always just sit back, relax, and enjoy his authenticity--the rich phrasing and feeling of the original bebop, the sounds of contemporary music, and Chris' own amalgam of voicing and harmony that made his music such an enriching, metaphysical experience.

Chris' wonderful trio performed at Bradley's, one of New York's best known jazz spots for pianists since 1969, for one thrilling week in May of 1994. He chose a wide range of standards during the gig, often relying on his own private muse to decide the tune at the last moment, which is why his treatment of each tune is so singularly personal. This recording contains four trio numbers and two piano solos. Chris was always very comfortable playing solo. He regarded the eighty-eight keys as a wonderful challenge for exploring harmony and emotion. Treating the piano as an orchestra, he used his exquisite touch to evoke nuanced moods and melodic panoramas. Chris had a peerless ability to improvise harmonically, creating more complex structures with each chorus. The feeling of the music was his well-spring, which was always enhanced by these daring explorations. His fresh voicings and colors give standards like "Somewhere" and "It Never Entered My Mind" new wings that mesmerized the audience and deserve repeat listening in order to enter the musical doors that Chris opened.
